I was a bit self-conscious sitting by myself at a picnic table eating a world-famous Nathan’s hotdog, but a ice-cold Corona helped wash down my lunch and my angst.

As I ambled along the boardwalk, I couldn’t help but note the similarities to Key West. There was the kooky guy with all the parrots. There was the kooky guy with all the snakes. There were lovers strolling hand-in-hand. Requisite loafers lounged outside of the bars, and hawkers cajoled customers into the arcade. Loud music, a repetitive synthesizer, encouraged me to walk a bit faster and further.

The sun beat mercilessly on my head and made the shoreline shimmer.

I turned away from the crowd and the noise and lost myself in a vision. There, a couple miles offshore, a single sloop with white sails bobbed on the ocean. Oh, how I wished I could be on that sailboat, enjoying the breeze and the refreshing smell of salt spray.

Then, a sign for the New York Aquarium caught my eye. Despite the fact that Hurricane Sandy (oops, I mean “Superstorm Sandy”) nearly wiped out the attraction in 2012, it remained in business. I plunked down a $10 bill (told the cashier to keep the nickel change) and went into the main building. Other than the large aquarium exhibit, Glovers Reef, and the Sea Cliffs animal feedings, the aquarium did not have much going on. The Aquatheater was closed, the Conservation Hall was off-limits, and the large “Recovery Wall” kept the curious from seeing the renovations.

But I’m easy to please, so I spent some time watching the animals on display. These included Black-footed Penguins, a couple of Pacific Walruses, two Sea Otters and a California Sea Lion. Plus, the bathrooms were clean! That alone was worth the admission price.

I visited the gift shop and purchased a baseball cap with a penguin logo, then headed back for the boardwalk. Outside the attraction, I sat on a bench, my goal to stare at the sea. It’s a noisy, busy city and I’m a bit of a hermit. I tried to focus on the horizon and ignore the crowd.

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a small figure approach. I looked to my right and there stood a tiny, wizened woman. She must have been four-feet tall and weighed about 80 pounds. She was dressed in a tweed suit and wore a floppy hat. She tugged a shopping cart behind her. She must have been in her late 70s, and several of her front teeth were missing.

All of these attributes made me wary. Did she want money? Did she need assistance?

She nodded at my new cap and asked if I’d been to the aquarium. I looked into bright, dark eyes wreathed in a face filled with sun-kissed wrinkles and she smiled. So began the most delightful hour of my visit to New York City.

Amelia, a Russian immigrant, spoke excellent English with a thick Ukrainian accent. We spoke about her friends, her friend’s children, my friends, my children, my plans for the week, travel, art, history, 9-11, the Internet, and even archaeology. She waited, a discreet 10 feet away, as I took a call from my husband wishing me a “Happy Birthday.” (“I can’t talk now, I’m in the middle of a great conversation,” I told him, brushing off his salutation.) When I disconnected, I motioned for her and we launched back into our discussion.

I don’t know what really attracted her to me, what prompted her to approach and use the aquarium as a topic of introduction, but I’m glad. Meeting Amelia and spending time with her on the boardwalk was a highlight of my trip.

How often do we brush off passersby, especially older women, bent and busy with their shopping carts? Looking back, it is a delightful memory. She was so interested in me and it was flattering that she wanted to spend time with me on a hot afternoon, chatting by the seaside.

It was a sociable birthday, despite my solitariness. I spoke with many people in many places that day, thanks to the Internet and cell phone, but it is the conversation I shared with Amelia, on the historic Coney Island Boardwalk, that I’ll recall. It’s not often I look at other people, in particular a tiny, old woman, and think, “I want to be just like her.”

But that’s exactly how I feel. I only hope that I will grow old with the grace, dignity, and humor that Amelia possesses, not to mention her spunk and confidence.

100 Years Ago Today: “A Declaration of Independence We Celebrate,” The Washington Herald, March 3, 1913

In March 1913, more than one parade occupied the nation’s attention during President Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration in Washington, DC. The day before the official swearing-in, thousands of “suffragists” from around the country, including famous activists such as Carrie Chapman Catt, Inez Millholland and Helen Keller, gathered to march the streets of Washington demanding women be given the right to vote.

Planned to be a peaceable 1-mile walk from the Capitol grounds to the White House, the day before the event the organizers learned their request for additional security and crowd management during the parade had been denied by military, political, and local law enforcement unwilling or unable to participate.

The result, according to the next day’s Washington Herald (Washington, DC) was a scene of chaos and disorder with more than 200 marchers injured amongst the crowds, horses and automobiles. During the parade, “masses of coagulated humanity” blocked the route and interfered with the carefully-orchestrated displays and symbolic “tableaux” planned by the organizers, even as the advocates marched on.

We don’t always think about our privilege to vote or the courage needed by Suffragettes to achieve it for us. Sometimes, we need to be reminded just how special it is. My husband is the one who forced me to recognize the opportunity I wasted until meeting him. On our honeymoon, we happened by a Voter Registration booth and he asked if I were registered. As a young woman, my thoughts weren’t politically inclined, so I ignored my right to vote for three years.

I haven’t missed an election since that day more than 32 years ago, and you shouldn’t either. It’s okay for people to remind us of the opportunity to vote and to encourage us to use it. They do so because they care.

Few people realize that their sense of smell is a most important tool when selecting a lover. Scientists have discovered that smell can attract and can repel a female, and when she is close to ovulating, that sense of smell is especially heightened.

What’s even more astonishing is that humans can identify 10,000 different odors, and scientists say women are better at it because of estrogen. This fact was discovered after researchers tested pre-pubescent girls and post-menopausal women and discovered that they were less sensitive to odors, similar to men. Women of child-bearing years, however, not only are more sensitive but when confronted with the same smell, their sensitivity increased one thousand-fold.

In addition to the estrogen-ovulation connection, there also is a link to the immune system, and that’s where the repellent factor comes in. Scientists speculate that in prehistoric times, people lived in smaller, more closely knit communities and scent evolved to help women avoid selecting relatives as mates. The unique scent that everyone has is embedded in their DNA — a genetic code that is found in the same region as the immune system. So, if a woman finds a man’s smell particularly repellent, it could be that Mother Nature is shooing her away from a long-distant relative, or a mate whose immune system would not strengthen their offspring.

Hottest Love

I doubt Socrates really said, “The hottest love has the coldest end.” During the past 2,500 years, something surely was lost in translation by Plato. Regardless, I’m sure many of us can agree with the logic.

I recall my first “hottest love.” I was 16 when I first noticed the athletic guy jogging along the road by our house.

We had moved to the east-end neighborhood recently. I didn’t know many people, and fewer knew me. I kept to myself, standing aloof at the bus stop whenever my old car wouldn’t start. Dressed in Wrangler jeans, wearing chukka boots and smoking Marlboros, I daunted a lot of the kids in suburbia.

Why the attitude? My mother relocated us after my junior year at a scary inner-city high school, figuring I deserved better for my senior year. I had skipped 60 days the year before, hanging out in the parking lot or leaving school entirely. It’s not that I was bad or dumb; I preferred taking my chances elsewhere. So, I joined a clique and we would pool our lunch money, buy gas and drive to the beach or the mountains or an empty house, hanging out until 3.

It was a bad and dangerous school. I gained little intellectually, and even less socially.

A year later, now enrolled in the “rich kids” school, I was again an outcast. The few students I talked to were hanging out in the smoking area. I sat in the back of every class and doodled. Still, I was intelligent enough to carry Bs and Cs, without studying or participating.

It was a long thaw and the one thing that finally melted the ice was John. He’s the good-looking guy jogging down my street. Remember?

So back to John, shirtless and in cutoffs jogging down the road. My sister had noticed him a couple times and lusted after him. I decided it was time for us to meet, so I sic’ed my dog on him. It was laughable, really, which is why I did it. Tippy was a small shaggy mutt, most likely some kind of shih zu or poodle mix, and she loved to chase squirrels. I opened the door and told her the jogger was a “squirrel — go get ‘em” — and she did.

He stopped because he didn’t want the little dog to chase him into the road, and turned around to look for the owner. That was my cue to step outside, smile, apologize and whistle for the dog. I snapped my fingers and pointed to the ground and my dog returned to sit at my feet. I was counting on him being impressed. He was.

We talked a little and he asked about our family. I wasn’t flirting because at first, I thought I might toss him to my sister. I wasn’t hard up for dates, and she was in a dry spell. I invited him in for a Coke, and he accepted. My sister was at the stove, stirring a pot of her notorious chili. She offered John a bowl and again he accepted.

Like I said, at first I wasn’t interested in John for myself. But my heart melted as he gamely ate that bowl of chili, tears streaming down his face. I told you her chili was notorious. I wouldn’t eat it. I like brave, adventurous guys.

Despite my sister’s interest in John, I decided to keep him. Come to think of it, this was the second guy I had taken from her. That may explain some things … but back to the story and how the “hottest love” had the cold end.

John and I went out that summer and generally ended up necking in the car. Hot? Hell yeah! We were having a blast with each other, and he wanted it to go farther. Not me, though. At 16, I was a dabbler and despite the fireworks I knew I didn’t want to have sex yet. And not with John.

He was a handsome college football player who had graduated from my new high school the year before, which meant I became popular by association. Other perks included his ability to play the banjo (Rocky Top!) and he worked for Frito Lay during the summer (free Doritos!), but he just wasn’t my type. He wasn’t smart enough.

I’ve got nothing against jocks and their pretty muscles, but I needed more stimulation than just “down there.” When he would cajole and beg and threaten to get it elsewhere, I would say, “Go ahead.” When he said he loved me and waited for my response, I’d say, “Well, I like you a lot too.”

Soon, I just let him go. It was a fun romance but by the time the next spring had rolled around, I was looking forward to graduation and the “real world” and he wasn’t part of it. No, by then I had met another hot guy who had my attention and almost had my panties. Whew! Another close call.

But I never regretted my relationship with John. He was sweet and sexy and a great diversion. Dating him helped me open up to the students at my new school — helped me make new friends. He was perfect for the transition from my lonely, frightened junior year at an inner city school with gangs and riots, to my smug and superior senior year at the preppie school. The best part was, I only skipped 30 days that year. Already my life had improved.

Healthy Intimacy

Healthy intimacy is a primal need. We desire to be accepted at our core levels. When a couple rejects each other at their core level it is challenging to have a healthy relationship and to make the rest of the relationship successful.

In marriages, it is an important first step to recognize your compatibility as a couple and build from this point.

Over the years, we have been taught to override these primal instincts for security, for power, for money, for social status and even staying married for the children’s sake.

These decisions are not wrong, but how do you find peace with your decisions? Can you still experience joy?

Overriding our most primal nature creates conditions that result in affairs, domestic violence, sexless marriages, addictions, depression and illness. Everything appears right, but something is missing. This usually means your primal needs are not being met in your union.

Valentine’s Day 1981

My favorite Valentine Day’s moment is my wedding. I didn’t choose the date; my husband did, and to this day I don’t know if it was because he’s a romantic person or he just didn’t want to forget our anniversary. More than three decades have passed and I’m convinced it was a bit of both.

Here’s a blurry photo from an old family photo album of me and my newly wed husband. We’d stopped at a park after leaving the church to remove the tin cans and shaving cream and paper streamers from his classy green Gremlin.

After the reception, we escaped to our honeymoon at the beach. I remember stopping at McDonalds to grab cheeseburgers and chocolate shakes and the manager congratulating us and giving paying for our dinner (I was too nervous to eat at the reception!)

It’s been a glorious ride with many, many ups than downs. We have two amazing, brilliant, beautiful children (yeah, I know, all parents say that. It’s the law.), a wonderful home, the requisite dog-to-cat-to-bird ratio, a pickup truck and an SUV, and a credit card debt that frightens us. Yep, we’re living the American Dream and it all began on Valentine’s Day.
